What is The Changemaker Academy?

Picture
CMA is an opportunity to learn in a different environment. The teachers create units and lessons that combine the required classes-- math, English, physics, and history-- and provide space and support so that students can apply their knowledge and skills in a real world environment. Mostly, we aim to put students in the driver's seat of their own learning, so that all kids see themselves as intellectuals, problem-solvers, and social innovators.

Why Changemaker?

The aim of CMA is to "do school" differently, and more specifically, in a way that matches our current society. We prioritize content skills and 21st century skills, such as creative thinking, collaboration, and problem solving, as equally important. Therefore, we provide many opportunities for students to work together, to IMPROVE on working together, to create in a variety of formats, and to connect with the greater community.

We want to invite the whole student into the classroom, making space for whom they are now and whom they want to be in the future.

Our Four Pillars

What does it feel like or look like everyday?

Sometimes it looks like "normal school," meaning that you are reading a text in English, or working on algebra problems in math. And other times, you will:
  • Build games and toys in physics class as a way to learn circuitry. And then market them for an open arcade through English class.
  • You will interview members of the community, including councilmen, local professionals, and recent immigrants, and then publish a podcast about the Voices of Waltham.
  • Go on field trips! So far, we have visited Tree Top Adventures, Concord and Lexington, The Framingham Courthouse, and Olin College Expo Day.
  • Work with community partners to create lasting change in the city around your topics of interest.
  • Write, design, build, and host a haunted house as a fundraiser for a local nonprofit.
  • Learn how to use data to tell a story.
  • Argue a position in front of a judge and hear in real time how effective you were.
  • Build Rube Goldberg machines!
  • Learn the mathematics of warfare and decide how that affects political decisions.
  • Build scale-model bridges as a way to understand proportions.
