Beyond Their Disability
Books act as doors, they allow us to see other worlds, experience lives different form our own and meet people and characters who open our minds. But books also act as doors, allowing readers to see themselves reflected back. For this reason, representation is key. Too often people with disabilities do not see themselves in the stories we read, they do not see themselves as the hero of the tale. Fit this unit, in History and English class, students researched different artist, athletes, activist, inventors, musicians and actors who are living with a disability. These stories were presented to the Connections class at Northeast, where students will read these stories and hopefully see themselves reflected back.
For our Disability's Justice Unit, we are partnered with the Connections Program at Northeast Elementary School. We wanted to introduce ourselves in the best way we know how: through our favorite books. We hope you enjoy some of your old favorites and discover some new stories that capture your imagination.
