During quarantine, we took time to reflect on what COVID means to us right now, and what it will mean as a snapshot of history. Take a look.

Living History: Podcasting Our Stories

Picture
Interview with a NYC COVID Doctor
Silvia
"Because of the fast spreading nature of this virus, New York City has had almost every doctor and nurse work in the COVID ward, where my aunt was for two weeks. When I interviewed her, I found out about how working during COVID-19 has affected her life, along with the lives of her family and coworkers. She reminds us of the horrible devastation this virus has caused some healthcare workers to experience changes in their mental state."

Away from our Friends, but Virtually with Them
JuJu
"I interviewed my friend Kevin Le for this project because this pandemic really affected his life. When you listen to this podcast, Kevin, my interviewee is going to tell you how he has been separated physically, but not virtually from his friends. The news is also getting worse, but we are getting better."

Social Work and COVID
Genesis
"This interview is a great opportunity for others to learn a little bit more about what it was like to be a social worker during this time. It is shocking to hear that she had to re-learn how to do her work. Due to the rapid spread of the virus, instead of going out to work she needs to work from home. When Sandra tells us that she works from home and takes care of her children at the same time."

Paying the Bills
Charlie
"Dianna/My mom was able to talk to me about her experience with coronavirus quarantine. This interview is a great opportunity for others to learn a little bit more about what it was like to be a parent during COVID-19. It is shocking to hear about how the shopping bill has almost doubled with all of us home."

Missing my Friend
Alexandra
"Jera. I miss taking a lot of pictures with her in between classes or in the bathroom. I miss always working with her in projects or anything in class. Even though we always fought about little things. I miss these little fights we had. We used to laugh a lot for no reason. Now it's not the same I only get to see here though I screen but now we are closer than ever."

Everyone's New Normal is Different
Aish
"My mom, Kalai, was able to talk to me about her experience during COVID-19. We may live in the same household but my mom is experiencing this pandemic differently. This interview dives deep into what my mom does as her job. She works for a healthcare company but finds it difficult as she can’t speak with her co-workers face to face."

What Does Grandma Think?
Danielle
"This is an interview with my grandmother. I asked her some questions on how COVID-19 has been for her, both good and bad.  I hope you enjoy as we get to know how this is impacting the lives of loved ones."

Getting to Know My Brother
Nicola
"My younger brother started working at Star Market about a week and a half ago, and I wanted to ask him some questions about what it’s like working during a crisis like this and if he found anything spectacular during quarantine."

How Numbers Tell the Story

Corona
Ana
The name of the virus comes from the Latin word "corona" in reference to the form of a ring created by the tips that surround the virus when it is seen in an electron microscope.
COVID-19 Grows Exponentially
Sean
So that we could actually see exponential growth in real time, we lit a piece of paper on fire (my mom helped!). It was amazing how quickly it spread.
What do the numbers say?
Collin
As you can see by my graph, the U.S. didn’t have the most cases starting out, but the U.S. always has to be number one. The U.S. is supposed be the number one country in the world with unlimited resources. Yet here we are with the most amount of cases in the world and struggling to get PPE for our health care workers.
The numbers of infected is only one data set that tells the story of COVID-19. Our students thought about how other data sets also tell us about the impact of the virus and quarantine.

A COVID Companion
Evan
While everyone shelters in place during the Covid pandemic, many people have been looking for companions and turning to pets. In the month of April, “the MSPCA [saw] a 20% increase in adoption rates and placed 347 animals with families, according to Director of Communications Rob Halpin”. This is also likely happening because people feel more prepared to take care of a pet with more time on their hands. This is really good to hear because personally I love animals and will always be happy to hear animals getting homes.

Unmasking the Truth
Aish
With masks being required, the rush to get one has stores and online retailers raising the price. Masks and hand sanitizer prices on Amazon have increased by at least 50%. So if you're looking to buy a mask or some hand sanitizer, be prepared to pay a hefty price. And remember, social distancing is so important, but just as important is wearing your mask. One cough can spread/infect so many people. That cough contains droplets of water which may have COVID-19 cells since this virus is airborne. To stay safe and to protect others, wear a mask!

Everyone Started Baking!
Isaiah
Flour sales increased by 177%, according to King Arthur Flour. Last March, they sold only 2.2 million bags of flour, and this March they sold 6.1 million. With this flour, my sister Molly made a bunch of bagels and cookies.

Family Time
Kelly
Before this Pandemic happened, I would spend time with my family, but they were all usually busy when I came home from school in the afternoon. We would spend around 3 hours a day together. But now they are always with me and we would spend mostly the whole day together. We spend around 7 hours a day now, which is an increase of 133%!

What Really Happens
Brian
Over the quarantine I have been playing a lot more video games, as I've been inside alone with nothing but a PS4 my parents pets and the internet. With nothing else to do it can be easy to fall into a cycle of sloth  and redundancy if you aren't careful about keeping a good routine.

Before COVID on average I spent 7 hours per day on video games,  but now I spend about 15 per day which is a 114% increase. This is important because it is unhealthy and I doubt that I am the only one doing this. Note the amount of time gaming has recently decreased drastically, as the new hobby of gardening has been discovered by the gremlin civilization.

Battery Life
Milton
As most teenagers, I love to play video games on my phone. I usually play for an hour each day, which rounds up to about 30 hours a month. Using this amount of time to play my games doesn’t drain my battery, living enough power for me to use my phone to call, receive calls, and take pictures.

Since quarantine started, due to COVID 19, I have had more time to play video games. I am spending an average of 4 hours a day playing my games on the phone. This change showed a fast decrease on battery life, reducing power to 20% after I finish playing. I hope my parents don’t find my phone with no battery when they need to talk to me.
